John Alistair Clarke was until recently Director for international relations at the European Commission DG Agri, and is a former head of the EU Delegation to the WTO and UN in Geneva.

He has been a trade negotiator and diplomat for 40 years, in HK China, Geneva and Brussels. He was a negotiator of the GATT Uruguay Round and has negotiated for HK and later the EU dozens of trade agreements.

He is now a Fellow of Maastricht University and teaches also in Beijing, Rome and London; is a trade consultant for the international public affairs company FIPRA; is a regular journalist on trade issues including in the Financial Times, Modern Diplomacy, the BBC, Bloomberg, BorderLex, Politico and numerous other journals worldwide; and speaks regularly around the world at industry and other public events on the geopolitics of trade and the art of negotiation.
